we've had a rough time teaching arys to tell us when she is crossing the street or leaving the house without telling us. we've done time out, we've done spankings. we've talked to her, nothing really helps. today, like always, she was across the street without me knowing, so i brought her in and put her in time out. after a few minutes i went in and talked to her and explained how important it was (in two year old language) that it is scary for mom and dad to not know where she is, and how she needs to ask us to go across the street. and the main thing is that if we tell her to come back inside, she runs off and doesn't listen...
so after i was done talking to her, i said "can you be a sweet girl and tell mom and dad when you want to go outside? and come home when we say come home?" and arys said "no thanks mommy" and gave me a big hug and says what she always says when she tries to get out of something "i lub you so much"
soo.. i need some advice, any little random things any of you have done that has helped your little child listen to you. i know she is still young, but there's not much i can do when she can unlock every door in our house. we don't live on a busy street, but i do worry that she will get hit by a car if i'm not checking on her every few mintues, and that drives me crazy!

do you have latches at the very top of your door so that only you and John can reach it? If it's high enough she won't be able to get to it even with a chair. Or you can get one of those bolt locks that needs a key weather you're going in or out and just keep the key on you. She really can't get out then! Hope this helps!
Reward her when she DOES listen! Tell her she'll get a sticker or an M&M (or whatever she loves) every time she tells you she's going outside or every time she comes when you ask. Our kids have responded better when we notice the good. Every kid's different, though!
Another thought, get a bell or something the rings everytime the door is opened. Then you'll hear if she is going outside.
I think the biggest thing is to be consistent with whatever you try. I think a reward might help like Laurie suggested. Just keep it up!
consistantcy is the biggest thing. Owen has been such a terror lately but he is getting better because i have been really consistant. but that is really scary that she disappears. i would hate that. i almost wouldnt even mess with the time out thing and i would get another lock like they said above. its just not worth it. congrats on the baby by the way! we need to do lunch again soon
I dont have a child that big. But boy he doesnt listen to a word I say. I am all about locking, blocking, anything to where if he doesnt listen it doesnt matter cause he cant do it! I would definately get a lock on all doors so she cant get out! And then when she is older and listens you can rid of the locks, but wait then your next one will be doing it. So I would suggest locking her in!
Good luck!! I don't know what I would do in that case! She is a smart little bug!
